Project Design Surveying and Water System Design: The ductile iron water lines on two of Lander’s streets, Black Boulevard and Buena Vista Drive, had a long history of repeated water line breaks. The city determined that it would be more cost efficient to replace these lines than to sustain the continued cost of water line breaks and the traffic disruption they cause. James Gores and Associates was retained to provide the needed engineering design services to accomplish this project. The design required research of scant existing records, conducting the needed surveying, and then designing the 1,730 feet of replacement water lines.

Street Reconstruction Design: Because of the numerous water line dig-ups that these streets had suffered over time, the pavement, curb, gutter, and sidewalks were in severe disrepair. As a second part of the project, a complete reconstruction of the streets, drainage, curb, gutter, and paving was prepared. Because of funding constraints, this work was bid as an “Additive Alternate” to more closely match the work to the available funding.

Regulatory Permitting: Upon completion of design, the Department of Environmental Quality “Permit to Construct” was obtained for construction of the replacement water system.

Bidding and Construction Monitoring Services:    Our firm assisted the city in bidding and getting the work under contact. During construction, our firm then monitored the construction of the work. Because it was bid in October, the project was planned to be started in the fall and then completed the following spring. During the winter months, our firm periodically reviewed the street condition and prompted the contractor to maintain the street serving the hospital in good, safe condition.

The work was originally budgeted to cost $329,000 and was achieved for $237,000.
